NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., July 27, 2023—The Samuel Dewitt Proctor Institute for Leadership, Equity, and Justice (Proctor Institute) will be hosting the second annual Latinas Excelling at Doctoral Degrees (LEADD) program over the course of the 2023-2024 academic year.

Today, we're pleased to announce this year's cohort of LEADD Scholars:

  • Brianna Botello, Colgate University
  • Dejah-Maia De Jesus, Columbia University
  • Natalie Elias, San José State University
  • Emely Espino Bardales, California State, Fullerton
  • Nancy Morales Molina, The University of Maryland, College Park
  • Lydia Ornelas, Hawaii Pacific University
  • Jasmine Oropeza, University of California, Davis
  • Sarahy Torres, University of California, Los Angeles

LEADD is a program intended to equip and empower undergraduate Latina students, strengthen their confidence, validate their research interests, create community, and share resources to combat cultural and academic isolation of Latinas and women of color, before attending graduate school.

LEADD will include discussions and workshops on topics such as cultural and academic isolation, cultural values and academic expectations, peer support and mentorship, as well as identity, advocacy, and research design. Each workshop is developed to create dialogue and combat the common challenges Latinas face in the academy. In addition to these workshops, scholars will receive practical tips for professional development such as resumé building, networking, and identifying potential graduate programs.

In an effort to minimize any financial burden, the Proctor Institute will virtually host scholars without program fees and provide a stipend upon program completion.

Please join us in congratulating these scholars on their selection for the LEADD program! Learn more about each of the scholars here
