NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., July 30, 2024—The Samuel Dewitt Proctor Institute for Leadership, Equity, and Justice (Proctor Institute) will be hosting the third annual Latinas Excelling at Doctoral Degrees (LEADD) program over the course of the 2024-2025 academic year.

Today, we're pleased to announce this year's cohort of LEADD Scholars:

  • Melissa Romero, University of California, Santa Barbara
  • Briana Moncayo, CUNY John Jay College of Criminal Justice
  • Olivia Diaz, University of Southern California
  • Jury Medrano Jimenez, University of Maryland, College Park
  • Jannah Zabadi, Colgate University
  • Aleishai Pena Lopez, CSU Fullerton
  • Jocelyn Torres, University of California, Los Angeles
  • Jennifer Castro, The College of New Jersey
  • Andrea Guzman, University of Houston
LEADD is a program intended to equip and empower undergraduate Latina students, strengthen their confidence, validate their research interests, create community, and share resources to combat cultural and academic isolation of Latinas and women of color, before attending graduate school.

“We are thrilled to welcome our third cohort of L.E.A.D.D. Scholars and support them in their journey to the professoriate. This is an exceptional group of dynamic scholars who bring impressive academic accomplishments, along with leadership and service experience,” shared Bianca Neal, Proctor Institute Visiting Scholar and curator of the program. “We are excited to practically contribute to increasing the representation of faculty in higher education and see how their research interests will contribute to much-needed knowledge production.”

LEADD will include discussions and workshops on topics such as cultural and academic isolation, cultural values and academic expectations, peer support and mentorship, as well as identity, advocacy, and research design. Each workshop is developed to create dialogue and combat the common challenges Latinas face in the academy. In addition to these workshops, scholars will receive practical tips for professional development such as resumé building, networking, and identifying potential graduate programs.

In an effort to minimize any financial burden, the Proctor Institute will virtually host scholars without program fees and provide a stipend upon program completion.

Please join us in congratulating these scholars on their selection for the LEADD program!
